To Prepare or Not to Prepare....How do you write?

Inspiration versus preparation... It's a quandary for some... If you wait and write after preparing notes, an outline, etc., does it take away that creative spontaneity and leave the writing sterile and cold? Or does preparation keep you organized in thought, preventing your writing from taking a haphazard, frenzied path?

I personally find spontaneity great, but if I am working on a longer project such as a novel, then sooner or later -- and it's probably better to be sooner -- I will feel the need to organize my ideas, make that decision on where I'm going. Of course, then I always change a few details here and there along the way. Heck, I even do that with a simple email, come to think of it.

But let me know what you think... What works for you? Bottom line for me is... I'm at the wheel and that's great no matter what road I drive on!

It works for me too. Often, I return and do some cut and paste, polish, to make my writings more readable.

I write with spontanity. I like to work things out in my head then write it down. I call it Cold Writing. It means you don't have an outline to follow. You know the direction you want to go but you have to lay the ground work to get there. Also, it allows your charachters to tell the story instead of you narrating it. It pulls the reader into tyour worl you created.

My blog entries are done on a daily basis, but the ideas for my blog come to me so naturally thanks to my sensitive perception and critical eye.

When it comes to my own prose and poetry though, I write with sudden inspiration. Some of my best work comes out that way.

Wonderful blog and very relatible in the blogging community. Following you.

Michael.

just dropping by, and have to drop by again..for me, i like to write with the inspiration...as well as expiration.. you know when there is a lot pressure to submit or to do something.. ha3 i felt good as well as productive ha3 sponteniety is a lot better compare to the most prepared one.. you know when unguarded moments is at its best...it shows sometimes what is worst... ha3 till then!

When it comes to writing blogs or short stories, I just come up with my ideas and write and piece together as I go. I agree with you about a longer piece. If I'm doing a research paper or planning a novel, I would definitely want to do a basic outline to know my major plot points.

Stream of consciousness. It works well enough... so long as I remain conscious.

I think a combination of both is best a little spontaneity and a little organization. Thats what I do.

The more you write, the spontaneity becomes easier. That's the method I prefer. However, what works for me, too, is to prepare a tiny bit. Then I just start brainstorming like crazy, and in the craziest places. Like when I'm driving, which can be dangerous :)

Great question and site.

I am old school. I write (actually use a pencil and paper) to write my blog posts and then as I type them onto my blog, they get edited. My writing is better if I write it out on paper first.
