Name That Poet #7

Let's try for this one, a poem by another great contemporary American author. So, name and title, if you can guess.

They were women then
My mama's generation
Husky of voice--stout of
Step
With fists as well as
Hands
How they battered down
Doors
And ironed
Starched white
Shirts
How they led
Armies
Headragged generals
Across mined
Fields
Booby-trapped
Ditches
To discover books
Desks
A place for us
How they knew what we
Must know
Without knowing a page
Of it
Themselves.

Good luck to all! The time has passed..... And the answer is: Alice Walker

My guess as to the author would be Maya Angelou or Flannery O'Connor. As to the title, I'm clueless.

Getting close... this female author is probably more famous for her prose. In fact, one such effort crossed over into the world of cinema.

I almost guessed Alice Walker and would have if I had remembered to return to make a second guess!

April, I figured you knew since you came so close in your first guess! Stay tuned for more :-)
